A PEDESTRIAN death is waiting to happen at the junction of Devizes Road and Newport Street and when it does the responsibility will lie with the councillors who approved the new traffic scheme and the officers who advised them.
Safety for pedestrians appears to have been accorded the lowest priority in the new scheme.
The time lapse between activating the pedestrian crossings and the green cross signal is the longest I have experienced on any crossing.
Then the green cross signal changes back to red before one reaches the other side of the road. The temptation to jump the lights is enormous and many adults do just that. How many children still learning to cope with road traffic are similarly risking their lives?
It is time the traffic engineers emerged from the sanctity of the Civic Offices and stood with the pedestrians to see and hear their frustrations.
Criticism among pedestrians is universal.
