We are constantly being reminded that the landfill sites will run out of space in the next few years and that we should recycle more.

If recycling was made easier then I believe that many people would recycle their waste rather than fill dustbin bag after dustbin bag, particularly in view of the proposal to charge for additional bags to be collected.

I understand there is a recycling scheme for papers and cans whereby plastic boxes are delivered to the property and goods for recycling are put in the appropriate box and collected at regular intervals by Swindon Borough Council. I know this scheme extends as far as Little Hinton, but not to Bishopstone. I was told it would be implemented last September, but here we are 10 months later and still no boxes in Bishopstone. I would also question why this scheme is limited to paper and cans. Why not a box for glass?

Then there's Barnfield Road tip. This is not at all user-friendly and if we are to be encouraged to use it then improvements must be made.

You can guarantee a wait of at least 30 minutes, often longer, for the privilege of emptying your own garden waste from the bags and putting it in the skip. This is a filthy job and one to be avoided.

However, as there is a charge for the green bags to be collected from your property, there seems little alternative.

Yes, changes to the access road have been made, but not for the benefit of the public. The traffic has simply been moved from the roundabout on Great Western Way to queue back on itself when you reach the tip access road.

There are recycling centres all over town. However, again these are not user-friendly.

The bottle banks are often full and bottles are left around the base of the banks. Obviously some get broken so there is broken glass to be avoided.

Why can't these centres be more regularly maintained and the containers emptied more often? Better still, why can't more containers be provided.

Could I ask Swindon Borough Council to get serious about recycling? Of course there is a cost to setting up proper systems, but unless we set aside money and time now, then recycling will never get off the ground and we'll all be in real trouble in a few years' time.
