A FIGURINE of a small child reading a book represents countless youngsters taught to do just that by teacher Sheila Wallis, who retired from a Tidworth school this week.
The gift was presented to Mrs Wallis on behalf of the children by seven-year-old William McColl, who started at Clarendon Infants' School in the reception class, as have generations of children since she joined the staff in 1974.
Mrs Wallis, who lives in' Pitton, is looking forward to travelling and seeing more of her grandchildren during retirement.
But Clarendon Infants School will remain part of her life.
"I'll come in and help out and do a bit of supply work," she said.
"This is such a happy school, that's why the children get on it's like a family.
