JACK WILCOX CUP: CHIPPENHAM recovered from a shocking start to beat their arch-rivals in the final of the Wiltshire 20 overs-a-side competition.

Batting first, Chippenham were reduced to eight for three by the start of the third over, with Corsham's Australian seamer Rick Tyson taking all three wickets in the space of his first even balls.

Paul Bates hit the first ball of the match for four, but was then caught by Mark Coxon off the second.

Tyson followed that by trapping Chippenham's new West Indian import Sean Adams first ball and although Richard Bates survived the hat-trick ball, Tyson claimed the third wicket with the firts ball of his eccond over when he clean bowled Mark Hunt for one.

Tyson's fellow Australian Jace Lawson soon followed for three, bowled by off spinner Craig Chaplin, and at 19 for four Chippenham looked in real trouble.

Their innings was rescued by a fine partnership between Richard Bates and Trevor Lloyd, who put on 90 for the fifth wicket before Lloyd was caught by Chaplin off Paul Marsh for 55.

Bates finished on 40 not out as the Chippenham innings closed on 132 for five.

Tyson was Corsham's most successful bowler, with figures of three for 24 from his five overs.

Corsham's innings followed a similar pattern, with opener Paul Marsh, who made 61, the only batsman to ever get going.

The remaining 10 batsmen managed only 16 runs between them, with Tyson (6) the second top scorer. Extras contributed 21 as Corsham stumbled to 98 all out in the 17th over.

Off spinner Jason Searle was Chippenham's mosty successful bowler, with figures of four for 22 from his five over spell.

Searle, standing in for injured captain Ian Merryweather received the Jack Wilcox trophy and Trevor Lloyd was named man of the match.

Corsham chairman Tony Shardlow said: "Fair play to Chippenham, they deserved to win on the day. We took the early wickets, but Richard Bates and Trevor Lloyd batted really well."

Searle paid tribute to the performances of Trevor Lloyd and Richard Bates, who had helped the home side recover from their dismal start.

Said Searle: "At eight for three we were really up against it and no-one would have backed us to win from there, but Richard Bates and Trevor Lloyd batted out of their skins and got us to 132 for five.

"The game swung their way first of all but all of a sudden we had a target to defend.

"Trevor rode his luck, but played some good shots and was the man of the match.

"It was a great team effort not only from the 11 out there, but from guys like Ian and Paul Clifford who helped get us to the final as well."

Searle was delighted his side had managed to put one over on their Premier One neighbours.

He said: "It was a turning wicket and that obviously helped Richard Bates and myself. Paul Marsh got 50-odd, but once we got him they had no chance.

"It was nice to compete with the best and prove what we can do.

"Hopefully we can get promotion so we can play them in the league next year."
