ON behalf of Corsham Twinning Association I would like to reply to the article headed Fury at Queen Snub as French Day celebrated which was printed in the July 12 edition of the Chippenham News.
French Market Day is an annual event, organised by Corsham Twinning Association, which is enjoyed by many of the people of Corsham and beyond. Each year we, along with the organisers of Corsham Festival, pay to have the red, white and blue bunting erected and taken down.
The bunting is always available for anyone else to borrow, should they so wish, including Corsham Town Council (and high street traders).
We are not in any way responsible for the lack of flags to mark the Queen's jubilee, and Corsham traders and shopkeepers were at liberty to show flags on their properties if they wished to do so.
Our annual celebration and fundraising event is not a snub to Her Majesty The Queen. Our French friends are very respectful of our royal family; in fact this year our gift to our visitors from Jargeau was a set of jubilee coins which were greatly appreciated.
Our French guests admire all things British and they very much enjoyed the roast beef dinner we served them on the eve of their departure!
In conclusion, the day was a huge success, with more people visiting Corsham on that morning than ever before and with stallholders making more money for charitable funds and organisations than in previous years.
I would be grateful if you would print this letter to clarify the position of the Twinning Association and the organisers of the Corsham Festival.
MAURICE HANCOCK,
Chairman,
Corsham Twinning Association.
