THIS hoo-ha in Westbury churchyard begs us to ask if society gets the youngsters it deserves.

Adult standards leave much to be desired: we accept blatant sex on stage and screen; we litter our streets; integrity in public and private life is dodgy, whilst the conduct of the British holidaymaker is deemed the worst in Europe.

Against this, most teenagers are splendid; only a few have caused recent trouble.

Of course, residents are distressed and provoked but they are to be encouraged by positive police response and the initiative which press publicity will inspire.

It is to be hoped that the Town Council will sponsor an open meeting with a review of the entire youth scene. And let's be hearing from the youngsters themselves.

Have they got a voice elsewhere?

The county council has responsibility and authority for the youth service.

A report in your paper of its policy, funding, priorities, provision and plans would be welcome. Let us see what is, and what is not being done.

I remain convinced that the most effective youth work is done by imaginative leaders who care, in small voluntary groups.

JOHN MASON,

Church Street,

Westbury.
