TRAGEDY struck again on Wiltshire's roads on Tuesday, July 23, when father of two Nick Hall was crushed to death when a 17-tonne truck ploughed into the back of his lorry.
It is believed Mr Hall, a white line installer for Ringway Parkman, had stopped his vehicle in a layby on the A350 near Upton Scudamore to check his trailer hitch.
He was believed to be standing between his cab and trailer when a Bristol-based truck struck him.
Our sympathies go to Mr Hall's wife and two young children.
In tragic accidents like this, it is all too easy to say, 'if only'. If Mr Hall had pulled up elsewhere, or decided to check his vehicle five minutes earlier, or later, things could have been so different.
Unfortunately, there is little we can do when fate deals such a cruel blow.
However, a safety group in Wingfield has, meanwhile, hopefully averted many future tragedies by successfully campaigning for more footpaths in the village. A new footpath between Chapel Lane and Church Lane will be in place by the end of the year, and the group is now campaigning for another between Magdalene Lane and the crossroads.
Well done to those who, in a world of uncertainties, have made village residents that bit safer.
