Businesses in the south west have welcomed the publication of studies on the future of the region's air services, according to the regional office of the Confederation of British Industry.
It says that aviation plays a crucial role in maintaining the competitiveness of the region, attracting inward investment and supporting employment and tourism.
Andrew Skipp, CBI South West Council Member, said: "Business in the area welcomes the opportunity to consult on making the best future use of the region's airports.
"South West Businesses needs more direct services from the region to Europe and America in order to compete in the global economy.
"It is vital we have a long term framework that allows for the sustainable growth of aviation in the region that will help to attract investment and new businesses to the region.
"The CBI believes the studies must allow for the growth of the region's airports as part of a broad strategy that makes best use of existing infrastructure, offers increased and better public transport access for passengers and employees and measures to tackle the environmental impact of aviation.
"Business understands that social and environmental concerns should not be overlooked.
"But the CBI stresses that once the consultation is over the Government must commit to taking the tough decisions on where to expand airports.
"This is a once in a generation chance to get the future provision of the region's air services right."
