LUCENT FEATURE: Henry Schacht is chairman of Lucent Technologies. He returned to Lucent in October 2000 as chairman and CEO, having most recently served as chairman of the Lucent spinoff, Avaya, since March.
He also served as a consultant to Lucent from February 1998 until February 1999, and has been a managing director and senior advisor of Warburg Pincus since February 1999.
He began his business career at the American Brake Shoe Company in 1956. Following service in the US Navy and graduate school, he joined the Irwin Management Company, an investment firm in Columbus, Indiana in 1962.
In 1964, Mr Schacht joined Cummins Engine Company, Inc, as a finance vice president, moving up the ranks to become president and chief executive officer in 1973 and four years later chairman.
He retired from this position in in 1995, and was named chairman and CEO-designate of Lucent Technologies later that year.
Mr Schacht currently serves on the board of directors of Agere Systems, Avaya, Johnson & Johnson Corp, Alcoa Inc, The New York Times Company and Knoll Inc.
Mr Schacht graduated from Yale University with a BS and from Harvard University with an MBA in 1962. He and his wife, Nancy, live in New York City.
