CHILDREN who play in quarries and marine wharves over the summer holidays are risking their lives, says the Quarry Products Association.

The association's Elizabeth Clements said the places may look like a fun environment but have hidden perils for youngsters.

She said: "Lakes may look like great places to swim but they are often deep and dangerously cold.

"Piles of sand appear wonderful opportunities for tunnelling but children have been buried when their "caves" collapsed. There are also obvious dangers in playing around heavy plant."

Sand and gravel quarries around Swindon include Moreton C Cullimore at Ashton Keynes and Hills Aggregates at Latton. There is also the Johnson crushed rock quarry at Wootton Bassett.

The Quarry Products Association welcomes school trips to such sites and for its Play Safe Stay Safe resource pack call 0207 730 8194.
