I HAVE just read (and re-read in disbelief) your article concerning travellers and the steps the council are proposing to prevent illegal camping on common ground.
While I have no objection to preventative measures being undertaken, I was astonished to see that, in September, the Council will discuss whether or not to re-open the Chiseldon Firs site to groups of travellers.
Has the Council completely lost the plot? Does it not recall that, last year, they had to spend some £20,000 of our money in order to clean up the burnt out cars, piles of dirty nappies, old tyres, rubbish, excrement and filth that the last lot of visitors left behind?
Is it such a shambolic organisation that it would even consider re-opening a piece of ground in a respectable area to people who, not only contribute nothing towards the place they stay, but seem to take pleasure in ruining it for everyone else?
If a decision is made to re-open the Firs, the answer must be yes, totally shambolic. The same problem would arise and another £20,000 (or more) of our money would be frittered away to clean up.
If that does happen the time will finally have come for a full investigation into the Council's neglectful spending practices something I think is long overdue.
