LOCK up your property and defeat summer thieves. That is the latest message from Swindon police, as the hot weather tempts householders to carelessly leave doors and windows open.
Swindon Crime Prevention division is warning that this could mean a bonanza for burglars and opportunist thieves.
And now the school holidays have arrived, officers want to extend the message to children when they leave the house to play with friends.
Crime Prevention Officer Paul Cook, said: "Home owners spend a lot of money on locks and double glazed windows, but we still continue to receive reports of burglary where entry has been gained via an insecurity.
"On average there are 10 break-ins reported in a 24-hour period, and this includes sheds and garages.
"Everything must be secured."
The Crime Prevention team has issued a series of guidelines for householders which could mean the difference between a trouble-free summer and the trauma of a theft.
Wiltshire already has the second lowest reported crime figures in England and Wales.
The police say the figures will come down even further if people will take simple steps to beat the burglars.
More detailed advice can be obtained by telephoning the police on Swindon 528111 or simply visiting a police station.
Anybody who wants to pass on information about burglary or any other crime can do so by calling the dame number or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
