ONE of Swindon's most famous sons has been spotted out and about at Coate Water.
Acclaimed writer Richard Jefferies will be celebrated in a Victorian family day out at Coate Water on Sunday, August 11.
John Price of the Richard Jefferies Society yesterday donned Victorian clothes just like the great man may have worn to publicise the event.
The society is busy with preparations for the big day out, which runs from 11am to 4.30pm.
Queen Victoria will be making an official royal visit and there will be lots of themed activities such as the traditional rural crafts of corn dolly making, lace making and hurdle making.
For the children there will be storytelling and games.
Members of the Richard Jefferies Society will be on hand to talk about the writer, who was born at Coate Farm in 1848, and his life.
Alongside the event, the exhibition material at the museum is being updated, focusing on the writings of Jefferies and Alfred Williams and the natural history of the area.
Much of Jefferies' most successful writing was semi-autobiographical and based on his reminiscences of life at Coate Farm and in the surrounding countryside.
