WALKERS from Chippenham have raised £5,500 for Romanian orphans after taking part in the arduous Three Peaks Challenge.
The 15 took on the challenge to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon in under 24 hours but they were hampered by thick cloud, rain and low temperatures on Ben Nevis, followed by rain and high winds on both Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
One minibus broke down on the way to Ben Nevis so one group of walkers had to start walking three hours after the other, and were forced to complete part of the Ben Nevis climb at night.
But the teams succeeded in raising thousands of pounds for the Home of Hope a home for Aids and HIV infected children in Romania.
One of the founder members of the Home of Hope is Ruth Richards, who is in her 70s and lives in Chippenham. She still travels each year to Romania, taking medication and supplies.
The walk was organised by her son Dave and the walkers included staff from Chippenham firms Wavin and Westinghouse. The town's Station Hill Baptist Church.and Calne Gospel Hall sponsored the teams' minibuses.
