I write to support the letter (July 25) from M Trevelyan-Hall concerning Marlborough College.

The relationship between town and gown (as in Oxford/Cambridge, Eton/Harrow) can sometimes be difficult but never intolerable.

However, the ancient town of Marlborough is recognised world-wide for its famous High Street and its well known public school.

The local businesses benefit from the parents of pupils who spend money in the town on prize day.

The school has provided not only scientists, politicians, jurists, doctors, poets, explorers but staff have participated in local civic affairs.

Remember Colonel Christopher Hughes, Doctor Tim Maurice and Jake Seamer in these capacities, who have all served as distinguished Mayors of Marlborough.

It is possible newer residents are not familiar with these names though. As a Marlburian, born at Savernake Hospital and educated locally and a long time resident of the town afterwards, I know the town has obviously seen changes in the populace in the last 20 years in particular.

I well remember the annual musical subscription concerts in the Memorial Hall being responsible for bringing famous classical musical entertainment to all in the town. This was subsidised by the college.

Both sides have much to gain by existing harmoniously. The town is far older than the college but they are co-dependant. All the citizens (and pupils)of Marlborough should recognise a good thing when they see it.
