It was with interest that I read about the proposed introduction of wheelie bin refuse collection proposed for North Wiltshire from spring of next year.

Having lived in Plymouth when the wheelie bin trial was implemented, I can confirm the success of the scheme in certain areas of Plymouth It has not been implemented throughout Plymouth due to geographical limitations.

However, the following details should be noted which are not currently in place in North Wiltshire, and which ultimately helped to make the Plymouth scheme a success:

1. Two wheelie bins (or box alternatives) were provided. One for "green" bin for recycling rubbish and one "brown" bin for other rubbish types. Collection of these bins is undertaken on alternate weeks.

2. Three sizes of bin/box were provided. This ensured that each house was given a bin suitable for its own needs whether a single person or a large family.

3. Collections in Plymouth are not cancelled due to bank holidays but the days of the collection are moved, with consequent days also being adjusted during the following week. How does the council propose to handle collections during a bank holiday week with the wheelie bins?

My collection day is currently Monday I always miss out on at least four collections a year. Even the biggest wheelie bin cannot be expected to cope with two weeks' worth of rubbish.

4. Householders in Plymouth are not expected to place their wheelie bin outside their property just to place the wheelie bin where it is visible from the road for the collection team.

I fear that unless the above actions are included in the scheme, far more difficulties could be encountered than those which the scheme seeks to solve.
