HERE we go again! Big business riding roughshod over small enterprises!
The small traders in Havelock Street and Morley Street have been ruthlessly plunged into anxiety and insecurity as their future would seem to be determined by the owners of the Brunel Centre, Westfield.
How did the traders hear about this proposal? In the Evening Advertiser!
These family businesses deserve respect, consideration.
Their diverse and individual trading is crucial to our needs.
While giant superstores have their place none can compare with the personal touch that they give.
I am reminded of the Beeching era during the 1960s, when all the branch railway lines were considered to be useless.
They were abruptly closed down and left to rot!
Now 40 years down the line they are being lovingly restored and put into action again by public demand.
It is crucial that we, the public, are not denied the pleasure of shopping in Havelock Street and Morley Street.
I know that, we, in Old Town still miss our wonderful little shops. Westfield know perfectly well that the small traders cannot afford the rates and rentals that they demand.
Let us hope that the current shake-up within the council will at last incorporate people of vision and understanding who are prepared to listen to the people.
