I read with interest the letter from Sue Davison of Bishopstone seeking answers regarding the recycling policy of Swindon Council and the availability of facilities.
The present recycling collection service covers about 7,000 homes and began just over a year ago to test the participation rates of the householders served, and the costs.
Swindon Council would wish to extend this round to serve most, if not all, of homes in the borough. But it must be accepted that there is a cost in providing such a service, which equates to doubling the present refuse collection costs of £1 million a year.
I am disappointed your correspondent complained of the facilities at the recycling centre at Barnfield Road.
A recent survey by an independent consultant revealed a customer satisfaction rate in the region of 95 per cent.
The recycling rate achieved by the site is about 50 per cent .
I can offer anecdotal evidence that queuing at similar facilities in comparable towns is often far in excess of that necessary at the Swindon facility.
Please report any concerns regarding individual sites to my recycling team on the direct line 01793 464571.
