A RUNDOWN shopping area in Park South is to receive a £36,000 government cash injection.

Cavendish Square, which has become notorious for its vandalism and crime problem, is one of 340 shopping areas in the most deprived areas of the South West to receive funding from the Home Office.

The money will be used for improvements including CCTV, burglar alarms, security lighting, shutters and environmental landscaping.

Coun Barrie Thompson (Lab, Parks) said: "It's great news that we've received this funding. The grant will go towards improving the CCTV cameras we installed 18 months ago, which are already showing results in deterring crime in the area."

The problems surrounding Cavendish Square were epitomised last year when an art project was attacked by vandals almost as soon as it was finished.

Artists invited people to get involved in a project to cover a bus shelter in wallpaper, only for the wallpaper to be ripped off after just a few hours.
