THE M4 westbound at Swindon was blocked for just over an hour this morning after a caravan was involved in a collision with a chemical tanker.

A Peugeot towing a caravan jack-knifed at 6.10am, ending up on the central reservation.

According to police it was in collision with a chemical tanker which approached it from behind.

Police were initially concerned because the tanker carried hazardous chemical warning markings, but there was no spill.

A female passenger in the Peugeot suffered minor injuries and was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon for treatment.

Lanes two and three were blocked until 7.20am, causing tailbacks on the westbound carriageway from Swindon's junction 16.

This latest crash comes just four days after mayhem on the same stretch of road in which two lorries overturned and one man died.

Lorry driver Raymond Whiddett, 61, from Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire, died on Thursday after his vehicle overturned just past junction 15 at east Swindon.

The same day another lorry overturned after striking the central barrier between junctions 16 and 17, near Chippenham.

In the second accident the driver escaped with cuts and bruises.
