A BUSY Swindon road will tonight be closed for resurfacing work just two months after getting its first new surface.
And the work cannot come soon enough for Lynda Nicholls, 43, who is among dozens of motorists who have fallen foul to a surface that has been branded more akin to an ice rink.
The stretch of Marlborough Road, between High Street and Signal Way in Old Town, was patched on July 8 and sprayed with rejuvenating material to make it safe at the beginning of August.
But there have been a number of near-accidents and shunts since the work was completed because vehicles are simply unable to stop.
Lynda, who lives in Park South, was lucky to escape injury when her Ford Fiesta was damaged after skidding into the back of a Porsche.
Lynda, a receptionist at Kingshill House in Old Town, said: "I wasn't speeding but the car just went from under me.
"The brakes locked and I went into a deep kerb opposite the Arriva Ford building.
"As soon as the road gets wet it is like driving on ice and is very dangerous. My accident was the third in three days. Luckily nobody was hurt and the Porsche only had a few scratches but I was left with a bill of £350 for the repairs on my car."
And within a couple of days of Lynda's accident a motorcyclist reported slippery conditions when he almost lost control of his bike as he rode from the Signal Way roundabout towards High Street.
Jackie Rooke, 47, purchase ledger supervisor at Arriva Ford, said: "We hear a screech of brakes every day from the road. It is more slippery since it has been resurfaced."
Swindon Council spokes-man Lynda Fleming confirmed that the road was due to be treated by contractors from Asphalt Systems International . She said: "Advance warning signs have been put up by the contractors, who will restore the road to the level of grit it had before the work."
