SO September 3 saw Abbey Stadium celebrate 50 years of greyhound racing. In that time, hundreds of thousands of greyhounds in Britain have been killed, simply because they reached the end of their racing life. Hardly something to celebrate!
While the punters prepared for their evening's entertainment at Abbey Stadium, many real dog lovers were gathering outside Australia House in London to demonstrate about the export of greyhounds to Asia. Greyhounds are increasingly being exported from Australia to Asia for the purpose of racing and breeding. This in spite of the fact that barbaric treatment and killing of dogs for human consumption in Asia is widespread.
Greyhound racing has been recognised as a cruel sport and banned in six states in the USA and in South Africa, with growing opposition in other countries. However, it is obvious that the countries where the greyhound racing industry thrive, profit is the only thing that matters.
If you would like to help in the fight against greyhound cruelty please contact Greyhound Action PO Box 127, Kidderminster, Worcs, DY10 3UZ.
