THE problems of filling in tax returns is far from most people's minds at this time of year.
However, two local tax experts warn that paying attention to the timing could prove costly.
Ian Lawrence, a director of chartered accountancy practice Lawrence Financial Management Ltd in West Swindon, is urging people to bite the bullet and fill in the forms, saving money as a result.
"The Government has advertised the fact that you should really start thinking about it now," he says.
"However, the very thought of reading those detailed and complicated guidance notes drives many otherwise normal people to develop selective memory loss and forget about tax for another few months.
"The September deadline is for those who want the Inland Revenue to calculate their tax for them.
"But people sending in a return without calculating their tax liability, are asking to pay too much tax.
"Like anyone, the Revenue can make mistakes, and it is worth calculating how much tax is due before you send in your return and then compare it to what the Inland Revenue calculates.
"You can then challenge any differences with them and ensure the calculation is correct.
"But if it is all too daunting, contact a professional for help, an accountant. For less than £150 plus VAT you could receive any potential tax rebate early.
"A good accountant will quite often save you his fee in the tax advice he gives you."
