A NEW era is about to begin in Amesbury, with news that the Co-op has signed a deal to build a £9.5m showpiece supermarket in the town centre employing about 135 staff.
The store, on the Redworth House and Worthing House site, will be 30 per cent larger than the existing Co-op in Salisbury Street.
The Co-op said the 15,000sqft supermarket would bring a new era in retail service to the town, offering modern, spacious shopping facilities and a comprehensive product range, to meet all the daily food shopping needs of the community.
David Parker, the Co-op's group regional chief officer, said the new store would offer 136 parking spaces, an extensive range of products, cash machines, provision for the disabled and parent and child facilities.
He said: "It's an exciting scheme that will help revitalise Amesbury town centre and I am confident there will be a lot of support for the development in the town.
"The Co-op's existing store will close when the new supermarket opens, with all 110 staff transferring to the new store."
