I RETURNED from holiday to read your article describing the condition of public toilets in the town and confirming their appalling state.

I congratulate your reporters on the adult way in which they approached a distasteful task and for resisting the temptation to use the adolescent humour usually accompanying media excursions into such a topic.

A clear message went out from your campaigning newspaper to the borough council and it is obvious there have been too few resignations.

I suggest you send your team with the officials responsible for this scandal for a weekend on the West Coast of Pembrokeshire.

While walking the Coastal Path, which is either side of Fishguard and exploring by car a wonderful area, we were amazed by the abundance of public toilets. It seemed that every little cove and beach and most main road laybys had a clean and pleasant little block.

None were architectural gems and many seemed old but they were mostly open all hours and well cared for.

If a relatively rich area like ours cannot provide what a much less wealthy one does, it must show a lack of willpower.

To many older or infirm people the lack of public toilets is not just inconvenient but is a huge restriction on their mobility.

Their needs should be respected.
