MARLBOROUGH opened their 2002/03 campaign in style with an emphatic friendly win over Oxfordshire visitors Grove on Saturday 7 September.
The home side made a perfect start when fly half Toby Mitchell caught the Grove kick off inside his own 22 and ran 60 yards to score the opening try of the afternoon.
Nick Dobson added two further tries before the break, with Andy Beacham converting one of them to give Marlborough a 17-point half-time lead. Some quick-thinking from Mitchell saw him go over for his second score early in the second period, before Grove hit back with a converted try.
Mitchell then completed a hat-trick of tries, while Dobson took his tally to four, one of which was converted by Beacham, to complete the scoring.
Marlborough travel to Pewsey for their first league match on Saturday.
