TRAFFIC through Bradford on Avon has been under close scrutiny this week after fears the closure of the A36 at Limpley Stoke could have dire consequences for the town.
Five Liberal Democrat councillors joined the party's new prospective parliamentary candidate Duncan Hames, on Monday morning to note the effect the road closure was having on the town.
The Highways Agency has closed the main route to Bath while essential repair and maintenance works are carried out. County councillor Malcolm Hewson said: "First impressions can be deceptive, but I am clear that traffic on the Frome Road into the south of Bradford is considerably heavier than usual and that is reflected in what we have seen on the town bridge.
"People are experiencing a significant increase in traffic on other routes including heavy lorries which are banned from the bridge. I am urging anyone who sees lorries illegally crossing the bridge to take the number plate and report it to police."
