THE sudden death of a Trowbridge woman is baffling police and her family.

The body of fitness fanatic Michelle Shergold, 34, was found by colleagues on the floor of her home at Paxcroft Way at 10am on Friday after she failed to turn up for work.

DC Paul Clifford of Trowbridge police said: "Her family are absolutely devastated. She was very healthy, didn't smoke, drank in total moderation.

"Her death seems quite inexplicable, absolutely unexpected."

A post mortem examination, carried out on Friday at the Princess Margaret hospital in Swindon, failed to discover a cause for Miss Shergold's death and police are now waiting for the results of a toxicology test to see if her blood can give any indication of how she died.

DC Clifford stressed that police are keeping an open mind.

He said: "It is suspicious by virtue of her age, her fitness and the suddenness of her death. We are keeping an open mind until such time as we have the full facts in front of us."

It is thought that Miss Shergold, who worked at Nutricia at

the White Horse Business Park, died some time after 10pm on Thursday evening.

A spokesman for Nutricia said: "It was a huge shock to everybody here and we have done our best to help her colleagues, who are obviously very upset. We extend our sympathies to her family."

Miss Shergold was described by police as a healthy and popular person who had boyfriends and many friends, but also guarded her privacy.

She was a fitness fanatic and made a lot of friends through Castle Place Leisure centre in Trowbridge, where she was a familiar face.

Centre manager, Marcus Welford, said: "She came in regularly and got to know the staff.

"She was very popular with staff and other customers and she will be missed it is very sad."

Police are trying to put together a picture of her movements on the day she died and are asking anyone who had contact with her to come forward.

On the day she died, Miss Shergold had taken the day off work for a dentist appointment in Frome that morning.

After that, she met several friends during the day before attending two exercise classes at the leisure centre, beginning at 6pm.

Police believe that she went on to have something to eat before returning home but have not yet discovered where.

What she did for the rest of the evening is unknown. DC Clifford said: "She left the gym at 8pm and between then and 10pm we have

been unable to find out what her movements were.

"Her flatmate didn't see her but heard her come in and, as far as we know she didn't prepare a meal at home."

Miss Shergold's grieving family have also urged anyone who can help the police find out where she was for those two hours to come forward.

Her mother, Pauline Roberts said: "She was a loving daughter and a loving sister.

"We would ask for help to assist the police in finding out what happened."

DC Clifford said: "If anybody had contact with her we need to speak to them.

"We will try to deal with information in as sensitive a way as possible."

Miss Shergold was driving a grey Peugeot 205, registration number H105 FPE, on the night that she died.

She had lived at Paxcroft Way since January this year, sharing with two other people.

DC Clifford added: "They all lead their own separate lives and it was a happy household."
