VACUUM cleaner maker Dyson has confirmed that 590 staff at its Malmesbury site will lose their jobs by the end of the month.

The redundancies mark the end of the upright vacuum's manufacture in the town as production moves to Malaysia.

In February James Dyson announced that 800 redundancies would be made, but the figure has since dropped, with many workers leaving early and others relocating to different areas of the company.

Dyson spokesman Susie Burke said: "The last day for the vacuum cleaner production is Friday, September 27.

"With different shifts such as four days on, four days off, some people may finish earlier than others, but all of the redundancies will happen by September 27. Production of the washing machine is staying in Malmes-bury."

Amicus trade union leader Roger Lyons called the redundancies "a betrayal" of Dyson workers.
