Recent reports in the Evening Advertiser demonstrate that Swindon Borough Council is still failing miserably to prioritise service provision and as a consequence it is the vulnerable of society who are suffering.

On September 2 there was a report entitled, 'Hundreds flock to the forest fun' that described how Great Western Community Forest a Swindon Borough Council partnership organisation staged a free event bringing together many ancient woodland arts and crafts to celebrate trees and the environment.

Demonstrations included craftspeople making bird boxes, clog making, circus skills and live music.

This fun day was sponsored by Nationwide, but what we are not told is how much council officers time and therefore public resources went into organising this event.

The following day, September 3 there was a report entitled 'Fewer people set to receive council care', which explained that more than £1 million has been cut from the projected housing and social services spending.

We were told that the number of people receiving care will decrease, that the people at risk of having their service levels cut include adults with learning difficulties and vulnerable children requiring housing placements outside the borough.

These planned cuts come just three months after the damning audit commission report on social services, which accused the authority of failing some of the borough's most vulnerable people.

It seems to me that this council is totally incapable of learning from its mistakes. As long as this attitude persist there is no chance of improvement to basic service provision in this town.
