AMAZING and fantastic were just some of the comments from visitors at the space-age Cellular Operations building.

The award-winning building in Peatmoor houses the UK's largest telecommunications company.

It threw open its doors to the public for a Heritage Open Day.

Visitors included the Frost family from Cricklade who marvelled at the state-of-the-art building, its innovative furniture and even its toilets.

Alan Frost, 49, said: "We've often driven past and wondered what lay behind the futuristic exterior but seeing it is amazing.

"The architecture is fantastic and whoever came up with the ideas for the toilets, which are lit by ever-changing lights, had a great sense of humour!"

Rachel Newman, employee services manager at Cellular Operations said: "It's great to have the public in to show them the building.

"It was designed to provide a comfortable and fun environment for its 500-plus staff and most people are very surprised at what they find here."

Interesting buildings across the borough opened to the public throughout the weekend as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme organised by the Civic Trust.

The idea is to develop people's interest in and perception of buildings, as well as giving them a chance to look behind doors which are usually kept closed.

Others taking part at the weekend included Wroughton Science Museum and Lydiard House.
