THERE was a marvellous result for the Coleview Rover squad, who fished the annual Rover Championships on a wild and blustery River Thames at Medley (Oxford) on Saturday.
The squad of 14 not only won the team event on points but also had the individual winner in the form of Keith Harris. Harris drew a sheltered area at the bottom of the venue to take a cracking 16-10-8 roach catch using hempseed as loose feed and hook bait.
It was a strong performance and included section wins by Ian Payne, Bert Page, Neil Haydon and Joe Thompson.
The team was completed by captain Mick Greening, Adrian Hooper, Fred Parker, Bob Smith, Barry Chalk, John Jarmen, Nigel Sawyer, Colin Dunn and Barry Jenkins, while Steve Byrne did a sterling job as team runner.
Some 20 anglers fished the Isis Open on their waters at Sutton Benger.
Marlborough match secretary Nigel Franks got the verdict from peg 83, where he used the pole to good effect to take two tench and roach for 13lb 4oz, ahead of last week's winner Mick O'Brien, who again took tench and roach but from peg 130 for a 12lb 2oz weight. Just behind was Andy Pratton, who included a tench and a bream in his third-placed 12lb 1oz take from peg 104.
Best of the small fish bags was taken by Mark Howes (9-2-0 of roach) and match organiser Peter Gilbert (9lb of chub and gudgeon).
Others: Neil Richards 7-15-0, Malcolm Ockwell 6-8-0, Vic Abbot 6-3-0 and Pete Sole 5-11-0.
The Peatmoor Bream Cup 14-16 year age group was won by Gareth Jackson with 10lb 3oz.
The runner-up with 7lb 12oz was Mark Kimber and in third place with 5lb 7oz was Wayne Franklin. Fourth place went to William Bryant with 2lb 11oz.
The 10-13 year age group was won by Edward Bryant with 5lb 7oz, with Daniel Franklin in second with 1lb 10oz.
More than £100 was raised for Liden Juniors in the Liden Community Challenge match held at Liden Lagoon.
Fish were hard to connect with and Tony Lowe's 8lb 10ozcarp was enough to push his weight to a winning 8-11-0.
Dave Pearce was second with 6-6-0, including a good bream with odd bits. Third was Nick Eagle with 1-14-0.
Fred Brown easily won Cloverleaf's match at Lakeside (Devizes) with a 59lb 9oz bag, well ahead of Derick Hillier (28-9-0) and Steve Neale (26-7-0).
With the roach hardly showing, Sunday's BCA match on the River Cole was a struggle and Vince Harvey needed only 2lb 6oz to win from Graham Smith (1-12-0) and Derek Wright (1-0-0).
Malcolm Fitzgerald experimented with a brand new range of groundbaits made by Gilder, and this brought him two bream for 8-14-0 plus over 2lb of bits to win the latest Raychem match at Sunset lake at Lemington with a total of 11-2-0.
Second was Neil Hitchinson with 9-12-0 and third was Ian Barker 7-10-0.
The Wednesday Veterans switched their attentions to Coate Water Country Park and were disappointed with the results on a very hot day.
It was perch which made up the bulk of the catches, Cliff Brown taking the most with 5-4-0 ahead of Len Simpson 3-14-0, Graham Rose 3-5-0 and fourth Colin Dunn 2-14-0. Some anglers didn't even have a bite!
