WILTSHIRE residents are being warned about a damp proofing scam operating in the area.
A home improvements firm, which operates under several different names, is contacting homeowners and offering them a 'free' damp proof survey, say Trading Standards officers.
The survey reveals a damp problem in the house and the firm then produces a contract which requires the home owner to pay up to £1,500 for damp proofing.
Sue Wilkin, Senior Trading Standards Advisor, said; "These people are not qualified to say whether you have a damp problem, or how it should be treated.
"The price they charge for ineffective and usually unnecessary work is excessive."
Ms Wilkin said; "We are extremely concerned that some residents appear to have been subjected to quite abusive behaviour, and we are anxious no local person is taken in by them."
Anyone being offered a free damp proof survey is advised to contact their local Trading Standards office.
