The Downland Ride, an equestrian event which provides an annual boost to the funds of Christ Church, Broad Town, attracted 114 riders who set off in relays from Barbury Castle Race Course on the Marlborough Downs.

The ten-mile route, across privately owned downland included 24 jumps.

This year the course was planned with the co-operation of landowners at Temple Farm, at Rockley and a section of Manton Stud.

A way round all the fences ensured that riders of limited ability were able to take part, alongside those with more experience.

Kate Swindells, one of the organisers, said: "Many helpers gave time and effort to steward the route and to deal with administration.

The vicar, the Rev Michael Flight and his wife Madelaine took time to help and to meet some of the riders, between attending to their church commitments on the day.

"It was a big success, though we won't know the final financial result for a while."
