FARMERS were hoping to disrupt milk supplies across the Swindon area when they blockaded a dairy last night (Thursday).

Highworth dairy farmer Guy Dibble, 42, was among those blocking the Dairy Crest Plant at Severnside, near Stroud in Gloucestershire.

Across the country farmers were hoping to block every major dairy plant. They say they have been driven to drastic action because the plummeting price of milk has put their livelihoods on the line.

Mr Dibble said: "Milk prices have been up and down like a yo-yo.

"We are down to 9p or 10p a pint and it is costing us 11p or 12p a pint to produce. It's retailing for between 25p and 40p so there's quite a big margin in there for somebody and we would just like a bit of our share."

Farmers were planning to maintain their blockade from 9pm until 1am.

Mr Dibble said: "If necessary we'll keep on coming back day after day."

The Dairy Crest depot pasteurises milk from farmers and delivers it to supermarkets. Farmers believe their action could see shelves empty of milk by lunchtime today.
