A BLUE CIRCLE quarryman assaulted two drinkers at a Westbury pub as a fight threatened to break out over an affair.

Patrick Bristow, of Windsor Drive, Westbury, told magistrates he attacked Mark Young in the Ludlow Arms in an attempt to stop a fight.

Father-of-two Bristow, 43, was fined £150 and told to pay £100 compensation and £55 costs by Trowbridge magistrates after admitting two counts of common assault.

Rhys Davies, prosecuting, said Bristow punched Mr Young, causing him to fall and headbutt a man standing behind him.

Mr Davies said Bristow's friend was arguing with another man, who, it was claimed, was having an affair with Bristow's friend's wife.

Bristow saw two men in the pub garden who he thought were about to get involved in the row.

Bristow told Mr Young: "You can keep you nose out", before punching him in the face, breaking his glasses.

Lurching backwards, Mr Young headbutted another man's eye, causing swelling and bruising.

Mr Young needed three stitches to the back of his head.

Defending himself, Bristow said: "There was a heated argument with one of my friends and another chap who I knew was having an affair with my friend's wife."
