THE long-term future of five community hospitals has been boosted by west Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison's vow to keep health chiefs true to their promises.

Speaking as a series of public meetings are about to begin, Dr Murrison promised to ensure pledges to keep all the five hospitals open are kept.

West Wiltshire Primary Care Trust released its strategic review last week in a blaze of controversy.

Threatening to close down two night-time casualty units for good, the review takes a detailed look at all areas of healthcare.

Members of the trust said no area of the review was set in stone and trust officials were 'committed' to keeping the five hospitals in Trowbridge, Melksham, Westbury, Bradford on Avon and Warminster open.

Dr Murrison has visited four of the hospitals. He said: "It was useful to get the views of staff and managers. We receive a fantastic service from our hospitals. I hope the trust pays close attention to the opinions expressed by residents during its consultation exercise and would encourage people to have their say."

Dr Murrison has written to trust officials expressing concern over the temporary closures of night-time casualty units in Melksham and Warminster.

He also echoed concerns of staff at Bradford Community Hospital, who feel its small size could threaten its long-term future.

He said: "Although it is relatively small, Bradford's need for a hospital of its own is considerably enhanced by the special needs of its elderly population."

The first public meeting will be held in St Margaret's Hall, Bradford on Avon next Thursday at 7pm.

Meetings will be held in the other four towns over the next two months with the consultation ending in December.
