An all too brief test convinced me that just when I thought Audi couldn't possibly come up with something more spectacular to drive they produce the RS 6 Quattro, the fastest road-going example of the marque to reach Britain.
Available as a saloon or estate (yes, an estate!), at £57,700 and £58,000 respectively, this is one of the most exciting cars ever.
Powered by a 450 bhp 4.2-litre bi-turbo V8 engine, it hurls the car from 0 to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155mph and a five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with Sport setting linked to steering wheel paddle shift.
About 700 of these machines are destined for the UK.
While the distinctive badging on the car alerts other drivers and enthusiasts that this is definitely not a car to be messed around with, there are other clues which give the game away should owners, perhaps wisely, decide to de-badge.
Recaro seats with special leather upholstry, steering wheel rim and gear lever knob are trimmed with perforated leather and the inside door handles are of a matt black adonised material.
There are two choices of interior colours, black or silver and valcona leather with silver piping on the seat's contours.
Brushed aluminium trim unique to the RS6 is also available as an option.
Fuel consumption sees a return of 13mpg in the urban cycle, 27.2mpg in extra urban and 19.3mpg combined.
CO2 emissions: g/100km.
Summary: A fantastic performer, this is a car only for the big boys who take their motoring seriously. It is even more exciting than the stunning superfast S8 limo which I will be writing about next week.
