WELL done D Gliddon Wiltshire Times letters, September 13) for writing what so many local people are thinking.

If West Wiltshire District Council planners refuse permission for the Ushers' site mixed development scheme of large retail/leisure outlets and housing, Trowbridge will definitely suffer.

Let's have less talk of long-term 'vision' and more action now on much-needed town regeneration with increased leisure and shopping facilities.

Marco Polledri and others involved in the Vision for Trowbridge already have £250,000 of council tax payers' money.

I challenge him to spend just £1,000 of that on a representative town poll with one simple question: Do you want the Ushers' site developed with shops and housing within 12 months?

He knows what the answer will be. Is that why he won't do it?

HELEN OSBORN,

Councillor,

Trowbridge Town Council.

I WRITE in response to all the letters printed about the old Ushers site, and what to build on it, speaking from someone who worked there for eight years, and whose husband worked there for 32 years.

The answer of what to build is simple: places of work, not more shops that cannot be filled, like the ones in The Shires still standing idle. And no more homes that the ordinary people of Trowbridge cannot afford to buy as there is no work to earn the money to pay for the mortgages.

If there has been this new vision for Trowbridge why not start with the old bus station still left as it was after that was pulled down, and other similar sites like the old Tesco.

Finally, if you are looking for ideas about the Ushers site, there is enough ground there to build a ten-pin bowling alley, cinema and burger complex and plenty of room left over for parking, so at least the kids of Trowbridge would have somewhere to go and the likes of us didn't lose our jobs for nothing.

Should we not be a town to be proud of? After all, we are the county town of Wiltshire.

Give it back to the people of the town and not to the pockets of the fat cats.

JOSEY ELKINS,

Sanders Road,

Trowbridge.
