Minimising damage to the environment by buying a 'green' car is not a main concern for 80 per cent of people in the south of England, according to research from new-car retailer Virgin Cars.

Instead, top concerns for drivers are other drivers driving badly, the cost of fuel and tailgating.

Drivers aged 45-54 are the most environmentally conscious when buying a new car. Those aged up to 34 and 65 and over are the worst. Regionally, the Scots are the most environmentally conscious.
