A 12-year-old boy has been left traumatised after a driving school car knocked him off his bike and then failed to stop.

David Woodward was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital suffering from injuries to his back, head, neck and arms.

Police say the middle-aged driver of the blue Citroen vehicle actually got out of his car, checked it over and then drove off without offering any help.

David, of Marlowe Avenue, said he was turning round in nearby Drakes Way, when the car came up from behind and knocked his back wheel.

He said: "I was thrown into the air on to the bonnet and then I fell about five feet away from the car.

"He actually got out, looked at his bonnet, told me my chain was loose and then drove off.

"I am really angry and upset and I think that man must be an evil person.

"I felt like running after him but it started to hurt.

"I just hope the police are going to get him."

David's mum Michelle, 43, had returned from a shopping trip to find her son in floods of tears on Drakes Way, at the junction with Marlowe Avenue, after the accident happened at about 8.20pm on Wednesday.

She said: "I am absolutely disgusted. He must have been a driving instructor but he shouldn't be teaching people how to drive.

"I just want to know why he didn't stop, David could have been badly injured. I just hope they catch him."

Tina Curtis, 31, of Drakes Way, witnessed the accident and helped David.

She said: "We just saw him bounce over the bonnet. We were really surprised that he got up. The driver seemed more bothered about his car."

She described the driver as being short, quite bulky, white, aged between 45 and 50 with grey hair.

PC John Webb from Westlea Police Station said: "On the face of the information we have received about this accident, this appears to be an outrageous incident.

"Anyone with children would hope that the driver of a car involved in an accident like this would have the decency to ensure the victim was alright.

"As we understand it, the driver of the car got out to look at the boy before getting into his vehicle and driving away from the scene without offering any help.

"We are looking for a blue Citroen from a driving school with chevrons down the side. Obviously this would be a distinctive vehicle and we are making enquiries in that direction.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was present in the area at the time of the accident, or may have information about a driving school which uses a blue Citroen car.

"All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence."

Witnesses should contact Westlea Traffic Department on 528111 and ask for PC Cooper.
