When Dennis Jones suffered his second stroke four weeks ago he was devastated.
But on Saturday the 76-year-old former Marine married his sweetheart Mair Walton and said it was one of the happiest days of his life.
Dennis, of Whitworth Road, Pinehurst, was given special leave from Princess Margaret Hospital where he has been recuperating for the last few weeks.
Dennis, who suffered his first stroke last November, said: "I was absolutely devastated when it happened but today I feel wonderful. It is lovely."
The couple have been together for 13 years after being introduced by Dennis' sister, Doreen, at a party.
Mair, 63, originates from Wales but moved to Swindon 20 years ago.
The new Mrs Jones said: "We just decided to get married on impulse about six weeks ago.
"There wasn't any particular reason why we picked today but it has been lovely."
The day was also special for Dennis' best man, Ivor Puffett, 75, who has been friends with the groom for over half a century.
Ivor, of Marston Avenue in Penhill, said: "Dennis was my best man 51 years ago when I married June. It's wonderful that I can return the favour.
"We lost touch for about eight years and then one evening I opened the Adver and saw Dennis in an article about stroke victims.
"I traced him through the paper and the hospital about six months ago."
Mair's daughter, Teresa May, 34, was one of the many family members wishing them well.
Teresa, from Penhill, said: "I am really chuffed to see them get married. Dennis is absolutely brilliant. He is a lovely man."
After the ceremony at Swindon registry office in Temple Street, the newlyweds and 50 guests continued their celebrations at a reception held at the British Legion in Stratton.
Dennis, who used to work with Plymouth breweries, was today going back to PMH where he will stay for a little while longer before returning home.
