LIKE Mrs A Smith (EA, September 17) we want every bus in Swindon to be of the easy-access, low-floor type and that is our objective.

Unfortunately, unless money is provided from outside sources, ordinary limited companies operators can only replace buses as and when their own funds allow.

Swindon has more low-floor buses already than practically all towns of similar size, following major investment in recent years by both main bus companies.

More than 50 per cent of Thamesdown Transport's all-day service fleet is already of the easy-access, low-floor type. By around this time next year, 19 more new buses should have been delivered bringing that figure to 70 per cent.

At that time, all except one of our main cross-town services will be served by easy-access buses and we hope that that one service will not be too far behind.
