A WAR memorial is something we tend to associate with the now elderly men and women who fought bravely to defend their country in the great and terrible conflicts of 1914-18 and 1939-45.
But it is important to remember that service personnel have given their lives in many conflicts since the vanquishing of Hitler.
It is therefore only right that the council is considering adding the names of those heroes to Swindon's war memorial.
From Aden to Korea, from the Falkland Islands to the Gulf, they have fought and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Perhaps the most famous is SAS sergeant Vince Phillips, who died in the Iraqi desert during the doomed Bravo Two Zero mission.
His family should be congratulated for their tireless campaign to have him - and those like him honoured.
