A couple of weeks ago you published a letter from me in which I highlighted the plight of Swindon's finances and challenged our MPs to produce the evidence of their actions to correct the lack of government support. What did we hear from them? Nothing. In the Advertiser on September 19 was a vindication of my views in articles which demonstrated the high level of salaries (and hence taxation) in Swindon, and the fact that we are likely to suffer cuts of £2m in our education budget. What did we hear from our MPs? Nothing.

When it comes to fighting for Swindon, "nothing" is a word which it appears is all too easy to associate with our current MPs. Simon Coombs (Conservative) was a good constituency MP and I voted for him. David Stoddart (Labour) was a good constituency MP and I voted for him too. The mention of Lord Stoddart perhaps explains the lack of action from our less-than-dynamic duo.

David Stoddart was recently expelled from the Labour party for daring to hold an opposing view to Blair and his cronies. Could it be that self-preservation drives Mr Wills and Ms Drown? If so, that is a shame. At this time Swindon needs someone with steel in their backbone and fire in their belly to do battle with ministers again and again until they win a fair deal for this town. Obediently trooping through the government voting lobbies will not achieve this. I am sure they are decent people doing their best, but their best clearly isn't good enough. They should make way for someone, from whatever political party, who has the courage and strength to fight for our town. It's dying.
