Local campaigners are celebrating now Wiltshire County Council has agreed to check out traffic problems in the Audley Road area of Chippenham.

Andy Phillips of Sheldon Road called on hundreds of local residents to put together a petition voicing concern about speeding traffic, congestion and pedestrian safety, in an area including Audley Road, Sheldon Road and Woodlands Road.

The petition was brought before Wiltshire County Council's regulatory committee recently and members agreed to the demands for a survey.

"I am absolutely delighted," said Mr Phillips.

"At last we can find out the facts about the problem."

The 460 signatures collected represented nearly 70 per cent of the residents in the area, and more than 90 per cent of the residents who were at home when Mr Phillips called signed the petition.

Chippenham Town Planning steering group, which has representatives from the town, district and county councils, agreed in January the area between the A420 and the A4, and from the railway line westward to the edge of the town, were priorities, and this includes the Audley Road area.

The survey will be undertaken using funding from the Local Transport Plan money allocated for Chippenham.

The survey will check out the need for traffic calming and the results will be reported to the town planning steering group early next year.

The county council reported five people had been injured in road accidents in the Audley Road area in the last three years.

Mr Phillips sent the petition to Richard Lander, director of environmental services at Wiltshire County Council, and copies to MP James Gray, Chippenham Town Council, and North Wiltshire District Council.
