Kington Langley Parish Council is hoping to start work soon on a£40,000 all-weather footpath through the village, after North Wiltshire District Council awarded it £5,000 funding.
The 1.2km footpath will provide a safe and clean route from the A350 junction with Plough Lane through the village to Langley Fitzurse School.
Parish council chairman Martin Ellett said: "At the moment you take your life into your hands every time you go into the village, but the footpath will provide a safe route so people do not have to step into the road."
"We hope it will encourage more mothers to walk their children to school so there are not so many vehicles going through the village at picking-up time."
The parish council has worked with the school as part of the national safe routes to school initiative.
Funding for the footpath has come from a number of grants, including £8,000 from Wiltshire County Council to the school as part of its school travel plan. Work will start before the end of the year but may be completed in two stages.
