Talented youngsters were rewarded for their artistic invention at a special presentation for the Malmesbury In Bloom painting competition.

Mayor John Bowen presented the prizes at Malmesbury Town Hall on Thursday and thanked the children for their efforts.

Coun Bowen said the town had done better than ever this year, winning a silver award in the South West in Bloom contest. "This is the highest position we have ever achieved," he said.

Six-year-old Laurie Petrie, of Milbourne, scooped first prize in the category for five to six year-olds, while her nine-year-old sister Rachael was highly recommended in the nine to 11 category.

Their mum, Fiona Petrie, said: "I am very pleased. They worked very hard at school to win the prize."

Results: In the under fives: 1, Katie Luckett, four; 2, George Gibbon, four.

Five to sixes: 1, Laurie Petrie, six; 2, Emma Barnes, six and highly recommended, Alex Searle-Barnes, six.

Seven to eights: 1, Maxine Marynicz, seven; 2, Amraj Aulak, eight; highly recommended Alistair Thomson, eight, and 'great fun' award, Isabella Keally, seven.

Nine to 11s: 1, Hannah Parsons, nine; 2, Ann Robinson, nine. Both Crystal Marita Rexworthy, nine, and Rachael Petrie were given highly recommended awards.
