MANAGER Don Rogers endured an afternoon to forget as Pewsey Vale's first ever FA Vase outing ended in disaster at Screwfix Direct Premier Division outfit Bridgwater Town on Saturday.
The Somerset side handed Rogers his biggest defeat since taking charge at Pewsey nearly two years ago, scoring at will after seizing the lead with just two minutes on the clock.
Pewsey's misery was complete when Stuart Hodson was dismissed following a clash with Chris Young.
Pewsey had gone into the game on the back of two impressive performances in the league, and Rogers was surprised at his side's loss of form. He said: "We were just diabolical. We scored the last goal, that's the only good thing I can say about it.
"We'd played well in the last two or three games and I just can't understand it. Bridgwater scored in the first minute and just kept scoring after that. They were obviously better than us on the day and looked like scoring every time they went forward. I was pleased when 4.45pm came. I was worried they would get into double figures."
Youngster Ben Kirk put the home side in front with a close range effort, before Young made it two from Paul Heywood's cross on 16 minutes.
Young then set up Richard Smith to put Bridgwater further in front ten minutes later.
Pewsey suffered a blow when key defender Martin Churchward limped off with a hamstring injury just past the half hour to be replaced by striker Paul Day. Churchward could be out of action for as long as six weeks.
Young laid on the first of Heywood's three goals four minutes before the break and added the fifth with a penalty after defender Steve Thomas fouled Steve Sokol inside the area.
Sokol fired home number six from 15 yards following another Young pass, before Heywood grabbed his second .
Bridgwater's eighth came when Danny Forward finished off an excellent team move, and Pewsey were reduced to ten men Hodson saw red after appearing to headbutt dangerman Young. Haywood completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes to go but the last word belonged to the beleaguered visitors, with Barry Flippance nipping in to continue his scoring run.
