The town's area transport group celebrated its first annual general meeting by electing three new members to its committee, including Paul Smith from the Calne Young Persons Town Council, and adopting a formal constitution.

The group is hoping to apply for charity status and is looking for administrative assistance from anyone with the right experience and interest, on a paid or voluntary basis.

A Matsui video recorder and Tandy amplifier worth £140 in total were stolen from the Free Church in Church Street on September 15. Thieves wrenched the grille from a window to get into the church.

At least £50 was stolen from a payphone at Marden House Centre on September 15. Thieves also caused £100 damage trying to break into an office.

: A new branch of the The Real Meat Company is opening in London Road at 10am today. On Saturday there will be a barbecue and tasting session outside the shop to introduce customers to the shop's products.

Firefighters extinguished a hedge fire in Castle House, which they suspect was set ablaze with matches or cigarette lighters.

The town's harvest supper is taking place on Saturday 28 in the town hall at 7.30pm. There will be entertainment from the Men Of Calne morris dancers, with a guest appearance by the vicar of St Mary's, the Rev Bob Kenway. There will also be music from local singer Christie Fielvard.

The Jolly Miller is hosting heavy metal band Night Prowler on Saturday from 9pm, and admission is free. On Sunday the pub is holding an open microphone session and anyone is welcome to sing or tell a few jokes.
